The Youth Services Department supports children from birth through middle school with materials, programs, and spaces designed for every stage of development. We also support parents, caregivers, and educators with resources, programs, and guidance.
We strive to connect children with materials that spark curiosity and imagination while providing a welcoming space where they can explore and grow.
Materials
Our collection includes a wide variety of books, AV materials, and digital offerings for all ages. Materials best for birth through 6th grade are located on the lower level. Materials for teens in grades 7 and up are located on the third floor.
Don’t know what to read next? We’re here to help! Whether you can’t remember the title of that book with the blue cover, or you’ve read all the Dog Man books three times and need something new, we can help you! You can also look at our reading lists for ideas, or try using Novelist, our book suggestion database.
Programs
Our programs include reading clubs, storytimes, craft programs, outside performers, and more. Check out our event calendar for youth and our newsletter for more details on upcoming programs.
My First Library Card
Getting your first Lake Bluff Library card is a big deal! When children ages 0 to 10 get their first library card, they should visit the Youth Services Department for a small celebration and secret surprise!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading program designed to help your little one build a love of books and develop early literacy skills.
Phyllis Fox Writing Celebration
The Phyllis Memorial Writing Contest is an annual event where children in kindergarten through eighth grade can submit a short piece of writing or a bookmark design in honor of the Lake Bluff Library’s first children’s librarian, Phyllis Fox, and to celebrate the creativity and imagination of young people in Lake Bluff.

Imagination Library
Families in Lake County can sign up to receive a free book every month for children from birth to age five through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, made possible by the Lake County ROE Foundation.
