MNG-5: Requests for Reconsideration
In compliance with Public Act 103-0100, the Library believes it is essential in a free society toprovide access to all Library materials and services. No restrictions are placed on what anyonemay read or view. Well-intentioned individuals or groups may occasionally question theinclusion of an item in the collection, services or programs because of fear or doubt about theeffects on impressionable persons. Although the Library understands this concern, it is theLibrary’s position that the risk to society is far greater if public access to ideas and information isrestricted. No individual, group, or Library employee has a right to decide what others may ormay not read or view.
The Library is opposed to censorship, at the request of any individual or group, of materialswhich have been chosen according to the materials selection policy or programs and/or servicescreated to meet the needs of the community. In addition, the Library will oppose coercion onthe part of an individual or group seeking to have materials added to the collection which arecontrary to the selection policy. There is available from the Library a Request forReconsideration form and a process for handling any challenge or complaint with full attentionand due process for a Lake Bluff Public Library card holder with concerns.
